Show 41: Fan Fiction
By Dollar Bin • Jun 6th, 2007 • Category: Shows
So what is fan fiction? Hunt around the net for information on your favorite characters and comics and chances are you’ll run across it in one form or another. You’ll find movies, animation, pictures, stories and even full comics done by fans. How good are they, who is doing them and why? On this edition of the Dollar Bin we talk about the good, the bad and the embarrassing in the online world of fan fiction.
MiniCasts: available only at theDollarBin.net:
- Cartoon bunnies reenact movies in 30 seconds at http://www.angryalien.com.
- Elastic Lad? Who the heck is that? Jimmy Olson? How do these two guys fit together?
- The official Fantastic Four movie was not as good as Pixar’s The Incredibles which is seen by many as a rip off of the Fantastic Four.
- Why do the Justice Leaguers have to call each other by their first names. Don’t they have super hero names to protect their secret identities?
- Did the Joker (or the Dollar Bin #40) influence a real man to shoot a manager at a fast food resturant when he didn’t get what he wanted at the drive thru?
- Kris talks about his currently lettering job with Hard Way Studios. It’s called House at the Edge of Nowhere.
- Apparently, Tre is having a hard time defining Fan Fiction. He thinks that professionals can not partake in creating fan fiction. Why?!
- We pity the fool that bashes on Mr. T.
- How the Star Wars movies should have ended.
- Sue, Tre’s girlfriend, steps in and talks about someone she met, one of the Super Friends creators’ wife, Vivian LaBlonc.
- Adam is most familiar with Hentai fan fiction. He’s not the only one either. Marvel loves them some Hentai too. Check out Heroes For Hire 13. (Adam’s note: Let me just say that I am not most familiar with Hentai and Kris is a liar!)
- OMG! We talk about sex and girls. On a comic book podcast? Of course, why wouldn’t we. SEX SELLS!

So where are these pictures on the Fan Fiction image from (Power Girl, Joker, Bats)? That Joker looks freakin’ awesome! Too bad the new Joker won’t look like that. The Heath Ledger photo looks interesting but like you, I want to see it before forming an opinion on it.
I haven’t listened to the new show yet but I do want to throw this out there…Transformers erotic fan fiction. It’s out there. I don’t know how that works but I do know it’s out there.
Keep it up, the podcast is great. Later.

Hey Bobby,
Brian sent me those pictures to use in my composited image for the post. I’m not sure where he found the Batman: Dead End. I posted below links to the official sites of both of those fan films.

I’m not a huge follower of fanfilms or fanfic of any kind but I have found a few that I enjoyed. There are actually 2 Power Girl shorts by that same creator and they are both pretty good. I found several of the ones you were talking about and as usual, you were pretty dead on about what was good and what was bad. If the link thing works, it should take you to my favorite fanfilm that I’ve found though. It’s called “Losing Lois Lane” and it is hilarious. Adam, I also really enjoy those “shoulda ended” shorts. They’re pretty funny.
I saw batman dead end. Thought it was horrible. Still have to admire the effort they went to put it together.
Fanfic almost always is poor quality. I prefer the official stuff, except whens it of the quality of all star batman.
Hey Bryan,
Thanks for the link to the “Losing Lois Lane.” The Power Girls are fun to watch because they are kinda making fun of themselves in a way unlike the Birds of Prey you can find on YouTube. They take themselves way to seriously.
Kris
Yeah. Down with All Star Batman and Robin.
And yeah, I’m glad you pointed out that Losing Lois Lane. They are pretty funny. The poker scene in the third one is hilarious. I just find it incredible that people can do that out in public. I don’t get it. PS: I do have a crush on Power Girl. She reminds me of an ex-girlfriend, damn it!
Hey good podcast. I figure when you start guiltin us about comments I better show some love. Longtime listener. Love the show!
Wow. Tre’s plan worked. Where’s Tre been anyway? Tre?????
So I’ve noticed most people are listening to the “Sue” minicast. What’s up with that? Is is because it is simply a girls name or is it because it is the name of the character being portrayed by Jessica Alba? If that is the case then I recommend “Fantastic Incredibles.” Oh and I’ve just noticed that its tied with “Sex and Girls.” I see where your heads are. So this is the kinda listeners we have, huh?
I’m just happy people are listening to the MiniCasts. That’s awesome.
Kneel before the awesome power of Guilt! Catholics and Jewish mothers have really been on to something! Behold, as I use guilt’s testicle-shriveling power to gain comments! Mwah-ha-ha.
Anyway, It’s nice to know that someone is out there listening and enjoying the show, so thank you all for taking the time to let us know what you think!
I would also like to formally apologize to Fast food managers, Ike Turner, women, retards and Mr. T. I don’t know what got into me this show.
Bobby - Thank you for the kind words! There was a great comix shop in your town a coupla years back that was rumored to be owned by one of the R.E.M. guys. Do you know the place I’m talking about?
Nic - Amen. I have a hard time slogging thru fanfic too. I prefer to let Adam and Brian do the work for me and send me links to the good stuff. DO MY LEGWORK, BITCHES!!!!
Tre,
Yea, I know the place. It sucks. I try not to go there. Athens is not the place to come for comic book stores. I don’t know if R.E.M. ever owned it…it’s part of a record store and I think they might have had some ties to it though. I just started listenting to 41 today and I can’t wait to watch the Birds of Prey movie. Oh yea, if you want a good laugh check out something my wife sent me. I guess you would call this fan fic. It’s freakin’ hilarious.

(If this doesn’t work search “Superhero birthday party” and watch the first thing that comes up. Make sure the sound is up.)
WOW! Superhero Birthday Party ROCKS! That has to be the funniest fan fiction I’ve ever seen.
Kris
Dude, I crack up every time I watch that. Its funny “ha-ha” and funny “gay”. There goes some more of your listeners.
Finally back in town and got to listen to the podcast today - it’s probably the funniest podcast since Flaco’s rants…
I swear people were staring at me in my car wondering WTF while I was laughing with tears streaming down my face.
Oh, yeah. Screw you, Tre.
No more comments from me, bitch.
Man that Super Hero Birthday Party is da bomb.
Those guys don’t give a shit.
Man even I laugh my ass off when I listen to this podcast.
Oh, yeah. and Screw you, Tre.
Most fan-fic sucks, but over the last 1-2years, some of it is actually getting better which I guess comes down to technology becoming cheaper. I mean I can pick up a HD Video camera for au$1500, editing software for a few hundred more and the fact that everything is easy to use.
Hey guys!
I have had a long-running obsession with fan fiction in all forms. I think I first learned about it when I watched Trekkies in university. Speaking strictly about the written form, and mostly about homoerotic (slash) fiction, I think it’s kind of amazing how much of it is out there. At first I was totally weirded out and found it totally hilarious, but I’ve come to see it as kind of the ultimate feminist response to the over-sexualization of women in comics/television/movies. And, honestly, there are some writers who are pretty damn good who are investing their time in writing fanfic just because they love the characters so much. I think there’s something kind of awesome about that love for a fictional character
For some reason, though, when this love gets put on film, I’m not into it. I don’t really watch many fan videos, but I haven’t really seen any that I didn’t just think were ridiculous. Even, like, Grayson, which had a huge budget apparently, was just so damn silly. Especially when Green Lantern shows up for a split second.
But, I think there is something to be said about how every writer in comics today, other than those who are creating their own characters, are essentially writing fan fiction. It’s licensed, and they make money, but they are still taking established characters, which they love and have loved for years, and are playing with them.
I would say that the vast majority of fanfic in all forms is pretty cheesy and lame, but I love the fans for trying, because it’s the ultimate love letter to a character. And every now and again I’ll read a story that makes me think “Shit, this is much better written than the show/comic/what have you.”
Plus, wouldn’t it be awesome, if you were an actor or something, to read fanfic about yourself? I think that would be crazy.
- R
university… thats adorable.
and boo ya Tre (and everyone else who doubted me) it can sorta be considered fan fiction when writers are writing established characters that they didn’t create!
…and yes it is all very silly and that’s one reason I was so drawn to it. Those people got guts.
