Rapping With Richard - Variants

It started in the 90’s…crazy, wacky, special comic covers the industry labeled “variants”. You see them every week in your comic shop and for a variety of prices. But what does Richard, owner of Richard’s Comic and Collectables, think of them as both a retailer and a fan? All you have to do to find out is press play!

Nice interview with Richard. Nice to know that someone out there hates variants as much as I do. I wish the conversation would have devolved into the worst variant covers ever. My vote is for the one with the gunshot hole in the cover.
Should I buy that Quitely ASBARTBW variant? Will I make money???
I'm not into the variant thing either. It just seems ridiculous to pay 3x, 4x, or 5x times as much for what is essentially the same comic book just with a different (and we must remember that different doesn't always mean better) cover.
I like the 50/50 covers too. It gives me a choice without sticking it to me.
Just curious, did you guys ask him how he feels about the blank sketch covers that Marvel's been doing? I'd like to know what Richard has to say about them.

He love those things. After the Fallen Son ones came out he made sure to order a lot of the Secret Invasion ones. He still has some I think. I've bought at least 8 from him to take to cons. We have no idea why they don't sell better, especially during con season. It just makes sense.
As Adam mentioned I do like the Blank Sketch covers that Marvel has done in the past. I think it gives you a good opportunity to have a cover created exclusively for you. Of course you still have to find an artist that will create the drawing you would like at a good price. They are perfect to take around to conventions. And the good news is that they are typically just cover price $3-$4 each. I know that there is a new one coming that I will also have in the store.
Thanks Richard
You bring up a good point, Richard. When that next blank cover book comes out will I buy it even if I'm not getting the series? I think answer will be yes. I love those things. Blast!
