By Dollar Bin • Apr 30th, 2008 • Category: Shows

Iron ManTony Stark is set to make his big screen debut later this week but before we get to Iron Man the movie star, what about Iron Man the comic book hero? This week we stop to talk about shellhead’s comic book past, present and future before the big movie release. Plus we take a look at Free Comic Book Day, Mighty Avengers, the end of Countdown and much more on this edition of the Dollar Bin.

  1. Was the shop in Cambridge called Million Year Picnic?

  2. First I went to Newbury Comics. That wasn’t it and it was mostly music and movies.
Then I went to New England Comics. That is where Andy will be signing. (At 3 different locations)
The shop was… Million Year Picnic. Yeah I think so. You have to go down in a basement to get to it, right? It was a pretty cool shop. I didn’t buy anything. I hate going in a shop and not buying anything, but I couldn’t decide and had to go to dinner with my aunt.

  3. Yeah, MYP is the one downstairs in Harvard Square.

The best shop in Boston is Comicopia in Kenmore Square, a few blocks down from Fenway Park.

  4. I gotta check that out. When I go up to Ma I rarely ever actually get into Boston. Cambridge is usually the place for me.

  5. The Dollar Bin boards really are THE place to interact with me. Thanks again to all my fans.
Is the Ozones video really that disturbing? Should I be ashamed of it? ‘Cause I’m not. Poop jokes are what make the world go ’round.
My favorite issue of Drunken Iron Man was issue 182 in which (and I’m not kidding here) a drunken Tony Stark, while in a tuxedo, uses his last cash on the face of the earth to buy a bottle of wine, shares it with a very pregnant girl, and then delivers said girl’s baby in the snow, in a New York City alleyway. The girl dies in childbirth. Tony then holds the afterbirth-covered infant in his arms through the night, through a snowstorm insuring it’s survival, takes the kid to a hospital and decides it’s maybe time to clean up. And the cover is amazing.

  6. Look at it this way (it’s how i do it)

There is always a Shazam (was the old wizard’s name) and a Captain Marvel.
The first Shazam died. So now captain marvel (billy) has been “promoted” and is the new wizard in charge of eternity rock.
That means that Freddy, once he completed the trials, is now “Shazam” as there was a vacancy there.
Concievably, when Billy steps down (or bites it), then Freddy Freeman will “ascend” and become “Shazam in charge of the rock of eternity” and he will pick a champion that will be called “Captain Marvel”. (wash, rinse, etc)

And I’m still disappointed that none of you read shadowpact, seems right up one of you guys’ alley. =(

  7. Iron Man was practically flawless as a super hero flick; it drops pretty obvious hints that would indicate a sequel as well… i’m thinking the next one should be equally great

  8. Great episode guys, very informative and entertaining. I’ve been recommending this episode to all my friends who are fuzzy on the history of Iron Man. Thank you for this great resource. Dollar Bin rules.

  9. Iron Man’s always been a character I enjoyed, even when I wasn’t reading it. I came in during the end of the “Demon in a Bottle” storyline. My first Iron Man comic was #181 I believe…where Rhodes puts on the armor for the first time and fights off Stane.

I had a complete run from that point up to about the #240 range and really enjoyed it a lot.

The run that kicked off after Heroes Reborn was awesome too…at the start anyway…and anytime you get Sean Chen art on something you know it’s going to kickass.

Once Chen was off the book, and the armor became alive it got dumb as hell.

In my mind, the definitve Iron Man artists are George Tuska, Bob Layton, and John Romita Jr.

There’s a Doctor Doom/Iron Man miniseries out now that’s the third part of a story Layon and Michelinie started back in the 80’s where they end up in Camelot fighting Morgan Le Fey. The first arc was good, or was to me back then, and I never read the second one…so I’m unsure about the quality of this new installment.

So anyway, great show and I enjoyed hearing Iron Man finally get some love from you guys, even if it was only the movie version.

Hopefully Fraction can make good on his intentions and turn Tony Stark into something other then the giant assbag he’s seemingly become of late.

If it’s good then Invincible Iron Man might join Astonishing X-Men and The Dark Tower books as my ventures into current Marvel Comics.

  10. Ok, so I read Invincible Iron Man today…

    It’s ok I guess.

I mean, I didn’t hate it and I do think the premise of the story is pretty decent.

But as far as the writing goes, I don’t know…I’ll definitely give it another shot.

Perhaps I’m just so far removed from Iron Man at this point that I need to be eased back into the character.

    We’ll see…

  11. great show!

ps - the artist for secret war was gabrielle dell’otto.

pps - invincible iron man 2 was great. not a big fraction fan (or larroca) but im digging the new series. larroca draws so many characters so blandly but for some reason does a badass iron man.

  12. When did 2 come out?

  13. Wednesday I believe…don’t hold me to that since I haven’t got mine yet.

  14. [...] it measures up at all. I don’t think that it looks as good or has as much brains and heart as Iron Man does even though it does have more action. And speaking again of other Marvel projects, the film [...]
